Saying Goodbye to BoogieFit

Tuesday 8 December 2020

Let's celebrate BoogieFit Solo Latin Dance!

When I first started my business, BoogieCamp, in September 2008, the only thing I offered was Street Latin Dance for Beginner classes - ie partner dancing classes where participants swapped partners. I started off in a carpeted yoga studio in Paddington, where classes were aptly called "Barefoot Boogie" although carpet burn was unfortunately common with Salsa turns! Then I moved to a wooden-floored hall in Bardon (and we put our shoes back on). In April 2010, I started teaching Latin dance classes at Kenmore State School as part of the Kenmore Community Education program.

After a group of teachers at a northside school wanted to learn Latin dancing steps as individuals, I had to create a solo Latin dance class and BoogieFit was born (although it was referred to as "Dance For Fitness"). BoogieFit got people grooving at Kenmore State School (February 2011), Pine Rivers High School (May 2011) and Stafford Heights State School (May 2011).

Over the years, it became clear that the beginner/newbie dancers wanted something different to the more experienced dancers. There was an attempt to separate dancers into two levels - beginners and intermediate. In 2016, I had the idea to create two different classes: (a) BoogieFit Latin Fitness (ie: basic Latin dance moves in a fitness format) and (b) Solo Latin Dance (ie learning Latin dance moves and choreography rather than focusing on the fitness aspect). Solo Latin Dance workshops were also offered from 2016.

Unfortunately, getting enough numbers into the separate classes didn't work and the classes got merged into BoogieFit Solo Latin Dance.

After having to cancel the BoogieFit classes in term 4 this year, I conducted a review of the class numbers and profitability of BoogieFit Solo Latin Dance since the beginning of 2019. I discovered that the average classes numbers (even pre-COVID) are not sufficient to continue the class.

I'm sorry to say that BoogieFit Solo Latin Dance will be discontinued, effective immediately.

For those of you who have attended BoogieFit, especially those of you who have been regulars for a number of years, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting me and my small business. It's been a pleasure sharing my love of Latin dance with you all. Over the years, we have explored a wide variety of Latin dance styles in BoogieFit - Bachata, Bolero, Bossa Nova, Cha Cha, Forro, Merengue, Rumba, Salsa, Tango and Zouk. I hope I've been able to provide you with some great experiences and memories through solo Latin dance!

Remember, you can still access BoogieFit/Solo Latin Dance tracks at any time on my YouTube channel here.

Moving forward, my focus in 2021 will be on Zumba Gold Fitness and Zumba Gold Toning classes.

Once again, thank you to those who have attended a solo Latin dance class (in whatever format it was for you at the time). Thank you for your support and for your trust in me as a dance teacher.

Cheers,
Olga

Olga is a fantastic instructor and it doesn’t take long to get into the swing of things. [I] always leave with a smile and moving nice and free.

Frequently Asked Questions...

Who is BoogieFit for?
This class is for you if...
  1. you want to learn Latin dancing but you don't have a partner or your partner won't join you, or
  2. you want a dance-based class with more Latin flavour, or
  3.  you just love to dance and want to express yourself with some Latin flavour, or
  4. you've done some solo Latin dance and you want to build your dance repertoire and keep learning new moves.

What dance styles do I learn?
  • Discover Latin steps from both Street Latin and Ballroom Latin dance styles, including:
    • Street Latin - Salsa, Merengue, Forro, Bachata, Bolero
    • Ballroom Latin - Cha Cha, American Rumba, American Tango

Do I need any Latin dance experience?
  • Previous dance experience is not required. However, please note that this is an OPEN level class. The majority of participants have been attending BoogieFit for YEARS, so the pace of learning is FAST. Beginners are welcome but you need to be up for a challenge and be willing to be thrown into the deep end. BoogieFit Solo Latin Dance is more complex than a Zumba Fitness class. Latin dance is a learned skill that requires practice, perseverance, brain power and a commitment to learning.

How complex is the choreography?
  • As we use real Latin dance moves in BoogieFit Solo Latin Dance, you may find it more challenging than a dance-fitness class like Zumba Fitness. Everybody is different, so one person may find Salsa steps more complicated than Cha Cha steps, whilst a second person may experience the opposite.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: There is no expectation about being perfect in the class. Dance is about self-expression, so feel free to create your own variations and embrace your "unexpected solos"!
What music is used?
  • The music can be Latin or non-Latin songs. Some dance styles such as Salsa and Tango lend itself to its musical genre - ie Salsa music and Tango music. Other dance styles like Cha Cha, Rumba and Bolero have a large repertoire of non-Latin dance songs.

What do I wear?
  • Wear your workout gear or any comfortable, casual clothing that enables full movement of your arms and legs.
  • On your feet, choose any type of supportive shoe with a flat sole that allows you to easily pivot, turn and twist your feet without jarring your knees and ankles. Cross trainers, runners or any shoe with too much grip are not recommended as these will "stick" to the floor.

What do I bring?
  • Bring a water bottle. You may also wish to bring a small towel to wipe down the sweat of having so much fun! There is no floorwork, so you don't need a large towel or yoga mat.

Do I need a partner for these classes?
  • No, all BoogieFit Solo Latin Dance classes are non-partner dancing - hence, "solo"! Everybody does the steps on their own as individuals. If you are interested in partnered Latin dancing, check out our Couples Latin Dance options.

What is the age range?
  • Adults of all ages are welcome! Generally speaking, the majority of participants range from their 40s to their 70s!

Who is the instructor?
  • All BoogieFit classes are instructed by Olga Gjokmarkovic, BoogieCamp's owner. Olga has been teaching BoogieFit since 2011. Her laidback teaching style will have you shaking your tail feather in no time! For more info on Olga, click here.

Firstly, we love Olga’s style of teaching - easy-going, patient and fun. Otherwise we wouldn’t have continued. It is also reasonably priced to learn at the Kenmore classes.

~ Sue & Alan from Moggill (March 2018)

I like how Olga teaches the classes in a relaxed atmosphere and keeps it fun. She encourages everyone to have a go.

~ Claire from Taringa (February 2018)
