I’m proud of myself for: 1) attending Kirtan three times in October, 2) doing my gym program 7 times in October and 3) joining the My Health for Life program... 1. Attending Kirtan After having not attended Kirtan for months, I attended Mellow Kirtan at ASMY Mt Gravatt for three Mondays in October. Hooray for me! What is Kirtan? It's a transcendental chanting meditation, which is great for relaxing my nervous system. Being able to use my voice and feeling the vibrations is incredibly healing. Chanting the mantras also gives something for my monkey mind to focus on. And I feel like I'm getting an inner workout through having to effectively use my lungs and diaphragm to breathe and chant; I could even call this belly dancing - haha! Or not... I've been attending Kirtan at the Australian School of Meditation and Yoga (ASMY), which has locations across Australia. Recently, I've been going to the Mellow Kirtan which runs weekly at Upper Mt Gravatt Progress Hall on Mondays 6:30pm to 8:00pm with vegan dinner afterwards. This event is run by donation. Find out more at: https://asmy.org.au/mount-gravatt/ I also have attended Kirtan at their West End Studio, which has Kirtan three times a week and they also livestream Kirtan on their The Mantra Room Brisbane Facebook page. Feel free to check out previous Kirtan sessions if their live schedule doesn't suit you. Have you tried (or would you try) Kirtan? How do you relax your nervous system? 2. Getting & Doing Gym Strength ProgramAfter finally booking in to get my exercise program at the gym, I did 7 strength training sessions in October. Hooray! As someone who is not self-disciplined (nor consistent) with non-time-based exercise, what’s been working is going to the gym straight after my final Zumba Gold classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If I have forgotten to bring a pre/post workout snack, I’ll drop into 7-Eleven and buy a sandwich or wrap on the way to the gym to keep me fuelled. Plus, the aircon in the gym is fantastic – which is very helpful on the hotter days we’ve been experiencing of late! What system do you have or could you create to help you keep accountable to your health and fitness goals? 3. Joining My Health for Life Program I have booked in (and had my first Health Coaching session) for the My Health For Life program, a Queensland Government initiative. The program is about helping you create healthier habits with a free Health Coach. I recommend you start with the Health Check online here: https://www.myhealthforlife.com.au/ What healthy habits would you like to create for the next month? Here's some inspiration from Jane Fond who says the secret to aging well is having more positive beliefs about aging. Watch the video here
