New Class Guidelines for our Zumba Gold Chair Moorooka Class

Picture
I’ve been reviewing how we've been running our Zumba Gold Chair Moorooka class, particularly the room layout and the balance between seated and standing movement.

Over time, I've tried a few different arrangements to accommodate everyone's preferences, but I've ended up creating a class that has become too complicated to run.

I’ve also moved us away from the Brisbane City Council’s original intention of the class being a Chair-based Zumba Gold class for seniors with some standing for balance exercises.

So, from our next class, I'm going to simplify things and return to a clearer Chair Zumba format.
What will change?

🪑 Chairs will be the foundation of the class

Everyone who wants to use a chair will have an allocated chair and space for that class. The class will primarily be taught from the chair, with some standing movement and balance exercises incorporated in the class.

I'll demonstrate the movement options during class, including ways to make movements smaller, larger, easier or more challenging.

🧍 Standing for the whole class

If you prefer to remain standing throughout the class, you're welcome to do so, but you'll need to use the designated standing area.

This will keep the chair spaces clear for people who prefer to sit, and will mean that people aren't moving around or negotiating for space behind the chairs during the class.

If you're using a chair and I invite everyone to stand for a particular exercise, you'll be able to stand behind your allocated chair.

💃 Modifications

One of the things I love about Zumba Gold is that everyone can work at their own level.

I'll continue to provide different options throughout the class so you can adjust the intensity, range of movement or whether you're seated or standing where appropriate.

However, going forward, I'll be determining the movement options and class format rather than everyone creating their own version of the class. This will help me keep the class safe, cohesive and manageable for everyone.

A few other important class expectations

🔇 When I say "Let's start", class has started.

Please stop side conversations once we begin. I need everyone to be able to hear instructions and safety information, and I also need to be able to hear you if you have a question.

⏰ Please arrive ready to start

If you arrive after the class has begun, and it is safe to do so, please quietly get yourself set up and join in without requiring me to stop teaching to arrange things for you.

  • Using a chair? Please take an available chair in the designated chair area and join in.
  • Standing for the whole class? Please find a space in the designated standing area.
  • If it isn't safe or practical to join in immediately, please wait until the current track has finished before joining the class.

📍 Your space in the hall

The Moorooka class uses shared space, so no one has a specific or permanent spot within the hall.

I'll arrange the chairs and standing areas before class, and please use the space allocated to you on the day. If you can't see me clearly, please adjust your own position rather than asking another participant to move.

If you have a health or accessibility requirement that means you need to be in a particular position, please speak to me before class and I'll do my best to make the necessary arrangements.

👂 Please follow instructions about the room setup.

If I ask you to use a particular chair, stand in a particular area or position yourself in a particular way, please follow that instruction. It allows me to keep the room safe and makes the class work for everyone. Please don't move chairs or change the room layout without checking with me first.

🎒 Where to put your belongings

To help keep the class space clear and make it easy for everyone to move safely:
  • Using a chair? Please place your belongings underneath your chair.
  • Standing for the class? Please place your belongings on the designated table in the annex.
This will help keep bags and other belongings out of the way and keep our class space clear.

🏋️ Want to use weights during the toning section?

You're welcome to bring light hand weights of up to 1kg each to use during the toning section of the class.

Weights heavier than 1kg are outside the scope of this class. The toning exercises are designed to be performed at the pace and range of movement demonstrated in the class, and heavier weights may not be appropriate (or safe) for these movements.

Please leave weights over 1kg at home.

💬 Feedback is welcome

If there's something you're enjoying, something that's not working for you, or something you'd like me to consider, please come and talk to me directly or send me a message after class.

I may not always be able to make a change, but I'll always be happy to hear your perspective and consider whether there's something we can do differently.

And finally, a reminder that this is a group class held within a shared community space, where mutual respect and consideration for each other is expected. Everyone is welcome, but I am responsible for determining the class structure, room layout and movement options so that the class is safe, enjoyable and workable for the whole group.

Thank you for your patience while I've experimented with different arrangements. I've now worked out what I believe will work best, both for the class and for me as your instructor, and I'm looking forward to settling into a consistent format.

Thanks everyone, and I'll see you in class!

Olga

Update: I've been asked whether a separate standing Zumba Gold class will be offered at Moorooka.

I'm not sure whether Brisbane City Council would consider adding another standing Zumba Gold class, particularly as there is already a standing Zumba Gold class at Acacia Ridge Hall on Fridays and a Beginner Line Dancing class at Moorooka Community Centre on Mondays. There are also a number of other Move Well Brisbane activities in the local area that you may like to explore, including Salsation, Seated Ballet, MoveFit, Aqua, Yoga, and Tai Chi Qigong.

You can see the current Move Well Brisbane activities and search by suburb and date here:

Please check the Council website for current days and times, as activities and schedules may change.
