      Dance Styles

Discover the various Latin dance styles and the music that complements them. Please note that all dance styles taught are Street Latin, not Ballroom Latin.

      Salsa

Salsa is the most popular Latin dance style in Australia. Originating in Cuba, there are many forms of Salsa including Salsa on 1, Salsa on 2, Colombian Salsa, Cuban Salsa, LA Style Salsa, etc. Cuban Salsa is more circular in movement, whilst LA Style is more linear and focuses on variations and additions to the cross body lead move.

      Merengue

Merengue is a simple two-beat dance style originating in the Dominican Republic. It’s ideal for beginners as the turn patterns are the easiest to pick up and can be translated into many other Latin dance styles such as Salsa, Cha Cha and Forro.  The trickiest part of  Merengue is stepping into a bent leg and ensuring that one leg is bent whilst  the other one is straight; this technique is what creates the hip movement in  this dance style. Merengue is probably the most versatile in terms of music choices and can get quite fast.
