Why Dance?

15/5/2016

As a dance instructor, I'm a obviously a massive fan of dancing.

I dance because I love music and I enjoy moving my body to music. I love the freedom and the self-expression - I'll frequently be joyfully dancing around my kitchen and living room to a song on the radio! It's a great opportunity to play and stop being so serious.

After I dance, I feel energised, and I'm always in a good mood, no matter what kind of day I had! I find dancing is a fantastic stress-reliever for me as well.

This blog post was inspired by an article I came across "Why Dance for Fitness: Here are 9 Reasons".

How many lessons do I need to be a good dancer?

What a great question!

I came across a blog addressing this question and thought I'd share it with you.

People can forget that dancing is a skill. And, like with any skill, it requires mental effort and practice to improve that skill. Unless you are a super genius, I would say it's pretty much impossible to become fluent in a foreign language in a few lessons.

Read the full blog here. So, my advice is to be kind to yourself (and your dance partner). Learning to dance is a journey, not a destination. Enjoy it!

What's the difference between BoogieFit and Zumba?

What's the difference between BoogieFit and Zumba?

There are two major differences between BoogieFit Solo Latin Dance and Zumba Fitness classes.

One of the big differences is that Zumba classes are available worldwide; Zumba Certified Instructors receive Zumba music and choreography for use in the classes. BoogieFit is only offered by BoogieCamp in Brisbane - and thus BoogieFit is unique in its music selection and choreography. All choreography taught in BoogieFit is created by BoogieCamp's owner, Olga Gjokmarkovic (that's me!). You won't find choreography in BoogieFit anywhere else!

Zumba Gold is a fun, simple and low impact fitness class. Add some spice to your evenings this winter as we'll be adding more Indian tracks in the Zumba Gold classes, including Bollywood.

Did You Know? The term Bollywood was coined in the 1970s by combining two names, Bombay (now called Mumbai) and Hollywood. It is India’s, and the world’s, largest film industry in terms of the number of films produced, and number of tickets sold each year!

Feel the rhythm with solo Latin dance

Solo Latin dancing gives you the ability to focus on you, your body and your connection to the music. You're allowed to self express, to experiment and to completely stuff it up!

BoogieFit - our solo Latin dance class - is based on a specific choreography for each particular track, with dance styles including Salsa, Cha Cha, Forro, Bachata, Samba, Bolero and Tango.

Before each track, we break down the steps, starting from the basics, then we go on to more complicated moves and combinations. It's not about being perfect though; it's about having a go and having fun with your "unexpected solos".

BoogieFit also works to improve your balance, your coordination and your ability to be lighter on your feet. What does it mean to be light on your feet in dance? Check out this blog post for answers!

Solo Latin dance is also a perfect solution for those who can't get their partners to do Couples Latin Dance classes with them!
So, are you ready to feel the rhythm, get into the groove and shake it? Try BoogieFit!

Challenge yourself to dance

Outside of having a fun night out and learning something new, dancing challenges the perceptions you have about yourself - what you think you can and can't do. I often receive comments from students who are surprised about how much they've learned in one lesson - even if they started off with two left feet! Dancing is also about connection - connecting with your partner, connecting with the dance steps, connecting with your body's movement, and connecting with the music.

Years ago, I had an interesting couple attend one of my couples dance nights. First of all, the guy didn't know where his partner was taking him, so, needless to say, there was a bit of apprehension to start off with! The night began with them arguing over the steps and being quite fiery with each other. By the end of the dance night, however, the guy was totally empowered as a leader in the dance and was leading his partner around the dance floor with confidence and elegance. I love seeing that kind of transformation - especially within three hours; it's so fulfilling as a dance instructor!
Challenge yourself with a taste of Bolero
Transform your Saturday evening into a dancing date night. See what you could achieve by smoothly sliding around the dance floor to Bolero. This couples-only dance night includes dance lessons in Bolero as well as time to woo your partner as you practise your dance moves! There is no partner swapping and no dance experience is required. For more information about our Bolero Dance Nights, click here.

... And I'm not talking about Vindaloo!

For those who love the Bollywood and Bhangra (Indian folk dance) tracks in the Zumba Gold Fitness classes, get excited... because there's more to come!

Zumba Fitness have recently released World Rhythms India, featuring new basic steps, music and moves inspired by the colourful Indian culture. Discover Bollywood, Garba, Lavani and Bhangra choreographies, which have all been created in collaboration with Shiamak Davar International, the dance academy founded by Shiamak Davar, the legendary Bollywood choreographer.

Did you know that the origin of traditional Indian dance can be traced back to the 2nd century?

So, let's say Namaste (hello) to World Rhythms India. I look forward to sharing the diversity and flamboyance of more Indian rhythms with you in the Zumba Gold classes from July 2015.
